Nottingham Contemporary in January - Our top 3 choices

Now that the new year 2023 is here, we know that many of you will be looking for new activities and events to take part in. Nottingham Contemporary is by far one of the best places in the city to discover both fun and obscure things to do in that respect. As you can imagine the calendar is already looking very full for this unique art gallery, with so much going on it can be hard to decide what you want to go to view. We’ve picked our top three favourite activities and events coming to Nottingham Contemporary in January 2023.

Candlelight: The Best of Hans Zimmer

Set for the first Friday of the new year, Nottingham Contemporary are introducing Candlelight concerts. The idea is to ignite the beauty of a live, multi-sensory musical experience and reproduce them in awe-inspiring locations never before used for this purpose in Nottingham. The inaugural performance will see a live orchestra playing the amazing music of world renowned composer Hans Zimmer.

Performances will take place at 6pm and 8.30pm.

1525: Speculative Archives Workshop

On Thursday 12th January between 11am and 2.30pm you are invited to join the Speculative Archives Workshop. This roaming workshop will be held in both Nottingham Contemporary’s Studio and Park Tunnel, which is a cave like underground passageway directly beneath the streets of Nottingham. The workshop itself will delve into counter-archives and audio-visual collage making.

The introductory session will begin with a display of work from the late Angolan anthropologist Augusto Zita N'Gonguenho, whose research has become the main focus point of this continuing project.

The second part of the workshop takes place at Park Tunnel, where participants, using audio-visual equipment will interact with the site. The techniques used will all be based on previous methods and field experiments used by the anthropologist in the Namib Desert.

Materials, impressions, sketches, and field recordings formed during the workshop will be stitched together to create an audio-visual cartography of Park Tunnel. The outcomes will be shared on 1525 Collective's Instagram.

This workshop is aimed at 18-30 year olds.
